Data on Bubble Tea Consumption among Singaporeans

Link to survey Link to data set

Introduction

Over 30 Singaporeans were surveyed regarding their weekly bubble tea intake and drink preferences. Upon viewing the responses, I chose a specific topic to work with which was "Favourite Bubble Tea Brand". The data was then represented in the form of a modified bar graph through code using p5.js.

Process

Initially I chose weekly bubble tea consumption as my area of interest however, due to the limited range in data collected, I chose favourite bubble tea brand as the data collected varied more. I also changed the number of people to percentage due to its small scale and also because I wanted a general perspective of the data collected.

Data Visualisation

This bar graph is modified by using boba instead of rectangles. The y-axis represents the percentage of people who were surveyed and the x-axis represents the list of bubble tea brands that were favourited. The graph also presents the people as students and working adults which is represented by the blue and red colour respectively. The blue colour was inspired by the blue student concession pass. Red colour signifies maturity and hence it was used to represent adults. Transferring from p5.js to Illustrator, I added an inner glow to make the pearls look more 3D and irregular.

Findings

Out of 31 surveyed, Through analysing the data, I found that Chi Cha San Chen has the highest percentage of votes at 46% and KOI as the second highest at 29% of votes. The highest votes from adults were placed on Chi Cha San Chen at 33% and the highest votes from students were placed on KOI at 23%. The Alley, Partea and Machi Machi had the lowest percentage of votes at 3% each.

Insights

From the findings, I deduced that Chi Cha San Chen is the most popular bubble tea brand. Secondly, I found that Adults prefer Chi Cha San Chen while students prefer KOI, with the brands having the highest number of votes from adults and students respectively. The Alley, Partea and Machi Machi were the least popular brand. I also found that adults tended to favourite the brands that were more popular as Partea and Machi Machi did not get any votes from adults.

Conclusion

Based on my findings and insights, I conclude that Chi Cha San Chen is the most popular bubble tea brand among Singaporeans, specifically more so among adults. KOI is the second most popular bubble tea brand among Singaporeans, specifcally more so among students. Playmade is the third most popular brand, followed by the less popular brands like The Alley, Partea and Machi Machi. I can also conclude that students are more adventurous than adults as seen from the wider range of bubble tea brands they voted for.
